Female Rap Debuts

I was just listening to "Save Me" from Nicki Minaj and I got to thinking about her debut; "Pink Friday" and how it stacks up against the other female rapper debuts over the years. Unlike male rappers; all female rappers who enter the limelight(for the most part) have a buzz. Consider that the only advantage female rappers have. They still; to this day have to struggle to be seen and heard which is a shame. My friend and I are suckers for female rappers; him probably more than me as I only can stand a handful of them.

Skin Deep, Sole
Remember Sole? Her debut album was released in 1999 before she married Ginuwine. Her hit single from this album was; "4, 5, 6" which featured Kandi and JT Money. Sole's debut is not bad by any means and she's quite the spitter; a little underrated at the time if you ask me. I think the main attraction to this album is the riveting album cover which features Sole dipped in silver paint.

Pink Friday, Nicki Minaj

Blessing numerous guest appearances before the release of this album, Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday" has been quite the hit but in all honesty it really doesn't stack up to classic female rap debuts which I will mention below. Maybe its because Nicki is not as hardcore on this album as some of her mixtapes but in all honesty some of the material is pretty forgettable.

Hardcore, Lil' Kim
This album stands as a classic for his sexually explicit lyrics and definitely living up to its name. In addition to the risque lyrics was Lil' Kim's risque photo shoot for the album which left little the imagination.

Ill Na Na, Foxy Brown

"Ill Na Na" stands as Foxy's best selling album and its not hard to see why; just check out the in your face album cover. Not to mention some sexually explicit lyrics as well. Couldn't go wrong there especially back in 1996.

Funkdafied, Da Brat

I don't know much about Brat's debut album except it established her as the first female rapper to go Platinum. It's a credit that Brat still brags about 'til this day and she should. I do remember a lot of talk about this album though but I was a little too young to remember it. I do remember some of the songs though.

First Lady, Eve

Eve's debut had like two different names and it was a pretty decent album and of course it remains her best selling album to date. She wasn't as sexually explicit which proved to be a breath of fresh air for those who were over the sexually driven material that Foxy and Kim gave us.

Da Baddest Bitch, Trina

One look at the cover of this album and you can easily determine the direction Trina went in on this album. Unabashed lyrics that will truly make you blush and laugh all at the same time.

Dirty Harriet, Rah Digga
It took a minute for this album to get off the ground for many reasons due in part to the time of its release. Rah's debut was released during the peak of Foxy and Kim and she wasn't selling sex; still went Gold though. Ha!

Cold As Ice, Charli Baltimore

Though the album never saw a commercial release; for a time it was a rare item to find(still is) and the album would eventually leak out.

There's Something About Remy, Remy Ma

Remy Ma had quite the buzz but she didn't follow up on it in time so when her debut was released; it pretty much fell on deaf ears. Fortunately though she managed to pull out a few hits from it; so it wasn't a huge waste!
