Mariah Carey Planning To Leave Def Jam?
This whole post is dedicated to Mariah Carey as there are three individual stories about the singer. First, Mariah's newest album, 'Memoirs'(which is one of my favorites this year) has been under performing and there may be plans to leave Def Jam Records. You don't say?
As a result of the lackluster reception of ‘Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel’, and Mariah Carey’s indignation with the handling of the record, sources close to That Grape Juice have informed us that the songbird may just be ready to take flight to a new label. There is reliable word that Carey has been at logger-heads with label-head LA Reid for several months now.Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon's Relationship Details Revealed!
The 39-year old diva has been signed to the Island Def Jam Music Group since 2002. The terms of the singer’s deal entail a minimum of 3 albums for the grand total of 22.5 million dollars, with her being named a joint partner with the Universal Music Group. Carey’s first LP released under the agreement was 2002’s ‘Charmbracelet’ which was followed by the 6x platinum ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’, ‘E=MC²’ and ‘Memoirs…‘, which was released on September 29th 2009.
If Carey decides to leave IDJ, I will not be shocked. The promotional efforts behind ‘Memoirs…’ reflect less than half of the energy that the label placed into the ‘Emancipation’ project. Has anyone else noticed that she has barely taken any new promotional pictures for this record with the exception of her single covers and the album booklet? Add that to Carey’s criticism’s of ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ being chosen as a single in place of ‘H.A.T.E.U.’, and it’s easy to understand why she might be preparing to ditch the label.
It is no secret that several labels have been itching to sign Carey since she left Virgin Records in 2001. Clive Davis (Whitney Houston, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson) at J Records, for instance, tried to get her to join his team. The real question is: should Carey leave IDJ, where would she fit in? I personally think that her best move would be to go back to Sony, where she would be able to get the attention and funding she deserves; a plausible option now that ex-husband Tommy Mottola is no longer with the company. Either way, with a rare talent like hers, she would be an invaluable addition to any label’s lineup.
When singer Mariah Carey wed America's Got Talent host Nick Cannon in 2008 at her house in the Bahamas, they promised to renew their vows every year. For their first anniversary they flew five friends to the One & Only Reethy Rah resort in the Maldives. As a gift, Cannon, 29, gave Carey, 40, three custom rings to match her original pink diamond engagement one, but that wasn't the only step up. "The first time, everybody was nervous. We didn't tell anybody, and I got there late, as usual," says the singer, who co-stars in Precious. "But the second time, on this sandbar in the ocean, everything was incredible." The couple are already planning next year's ceremony with even more friends at their new Bel-Air mansion.Mariah Carey Wins Acclaim For 'Precious' Role!
Carey and Cannon (in a Balenciaga suit) chose to renew their vows in the Maldives because "we both love exotic places and traveling together," she says. The ceremony was presided over by a minister, under a floral arch. "It was romantic," Carey says.
Carey liked the neckline and simplicity of the Roberto Cavalli dress. She wore a sheer veil over her naturally curly hair. "At the last minute, I said, 'OK, I'll wear a veil,'" she says. "Why not? You're getting married!"
Usually I'd get a more elaborate cake," says Carey of the heart-adorned creation. "But this was a really nice one."
"I don't really eat cake, but I had a very small piece that night," says Carey. Cannon, however, is another story. "He can eat whatever he wants."
After being recognized for her voice, Grammy Award-winning singer Mariah Carey is set to be honored for her acting.
According to Palm Springs International Film Festival Award organizers, Carey will be honored at its annual awards gala January 5.
Recognizing Carey for her role in the box office success 'Precious,' officials say they're delighted to present Carey with the 'Breakthrough Performance Award'.
"We're delighted to be able to present the Breakthrough Performance Award to the extraordinary, very beautiful and versatile Mariah Carey, who, in a critically acclaimed role, completely transformed herself from a glamorous music icon to a forthright social worker for the role of Ms. Weiss in 'Precious," festival chairman Harold Matzner said in a statement.
Carey joins Jennifer Hudson, who was recognized in 2007.
