Daily Roundup: UK's Newest Sensation
UK sensation Leona Lewis aka The New Mariah Carey has the #1 single in the U.S. with "Bleeding Love". The single dethrones Usher's "Love In This Club" which had been #1 for the last 3 weeks. While Leona is celebrating her #1 debut, the real chart story of the week is Chris Brown. Brown has 3 singles in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. One song as a lead artist, "With You" (at #3) next "No Air" with Jordin Sparks (at #6), and "Shawty Get Loose" with & Lil' Mama,T-Pain (at #10). Rapper Lil' Wayne jumps from 85-9 with new single, "Lollipop" featuring Static Major. Wow! The charts haven't looked this interesting in I can't remember how long.
R&B legend Al Green is returning with a new album entitled, "Lay It Down". The new album features guest appearances from Corrine Bailey Rae, John Legend, and Anthony Hamilton. The album was produced The Roots ?uestlove and James Poyser (producer for Mariah Carey). Green joins an already long list of old-school R&B artists who have been a part of a recent resurgence into mainstream R&B/Pop radio. Artists such as Teena Marie, Charlie Wilson, Chaka Khan, and Lionel Richie have all released recent albums with hit singles that not only show their musicianship but their longevity in this business.
Kanye West has been sued for stealing hit single, "Good Life". Songwriter claims West is using his song, "Volume of Good Life" without his permission. In the lawsuit filed, the plaintiff is seeking 85% of the records claims and names West and Roc-a-fella Records in the suit. Wow! Everytime I turn around someone is supposedly stealing someone's songs. Can we do anything original anymore? When I think about it though, doesn't "Good Life" sample Michael Jackson's, "P.Y.T". How in Sam's hill does this guy claim that Kanye stole his song. I guess we would have to hear the other version to really know.
Hot off the heels of the recent Danity Kane album, "Welcome To The Dollhouse" debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 Album chart, Bad Boy's male group, Day 26 is projected to have the #1 album next week with an estimated 225-250K units for their first week. I haven't bothered listening to the Day 26 album let alone cop it. I am just not interested in them as a group. I think they still have a lot of work to do. I think the album is just selling from the show and hype.
R&B singer Ray J reportedly revealed his sexual relationship with singer Whitney Houston during a radio interview. Like we didn't know? Maybe we didn't want to imagine it but Ray J doesn't bite his tongue and certainly not now being that he has an album being released, "All I Feel" on April 8. Ray J also made some statements regarding Chris Stokes and Marques Houston's sexuality claiming both moguls "take it up the butt". How does he know? Haha!
R&B singer Mya is working on a new album tentatively titled, "Smoke & Mirrors" to be released sometime this year. The songstress is working with Timbaland, Scott Storch, The Dream, The Underdogs, Dre & Vidal, and Bryan Michael Cox. If you recall Mya's last album, "Liberation" was shelved in the U.S. The album however found its way to U.S. by way of Japan iTunes. The set released two singles, "Lock U Down" featuring Lil' Wayne and "Ridin".
Diddy is having the best week ever! Having been vindicated from the recent 2Pac allegations that he knew about Pac getting shot at Quad Studios, Bad Boy girl group Danity Kane has the #1 album, "Welcome To The Dollhouse" in the U.S. with 236K units sold. It is the highest first week sales of the year so far! The female act becomes the first and only female group to have their debut and sophomore album debut at #1. Way to go DK!
Rapper Ja Rule plans to release his oft-delayed album, "The Mirror" this June. Guests include Good Charlotte and Jennifer Lopez! We will see if Ja gets it right this time. Ja released a few singles and none of them caught on. It is much harder to break singles these days especially for established artists. The number of failed singles from many artists explans the continuous pushbacks for a lot of albums.
Female rapper Eve reportedly got into a shoving match outside of a club along with friends which resulted in a woman being pushed down a flight of stars. Whether or not Eve pushed the woman or someone else did is unclear. Interestingly enough the cops weren't called. It looks like someone is trying to prevent a lawsuit but I don't know. This story is everywhere now.
R&B/pop star Donnie Klang from MTV's "Making The Band" will release his untitled debut album on June 10. Song such as "Spank Me", "Dr. Love", and "Take You There" will more than likely make the album. I just read that Usher is releasing his new album, "Here I Stand" on the same day so Bad Boy might wanna reconsider this release date.
Famed girl group Cherish is riding high with hit single, "Killa" featuring Yung Joc. Though the single is taking off, their upcoming new album, "The Truth" has been pushed back to May 13. It's no longer a surprise nowadays when an album gets pushed back but more of an upset especially if its an anticipated release.
The Jackson family is said to be broke all except for Janet, LaToya, and Rebbie. I think its interesting how all the sisters in the family are the ones doing well when the men aren't so to speak. I think that Jackson 5 reunion couldn't come at a better time!
It has been revealed that Mariah Carey's 2nd single is entitled, "Bye Bye". The song is produced by Stargate. Stargate is responsible for Beyonce's "Irreplaceable", Trey Songz' "Can't Help But Wait" and the majority if not all Ne-Yo songs.
Athlete Laila Ali (and daughter of boxer Muhammad Ali) has revealed that she is with child. The baby is due this fall. Ali joins an extremely long list of pregnancies and births that have taken over Tinseltown (Hollywood).
