Mumbo Jumbo

I'm back!!! I hope you all enjoyed your holiday season. I sure did. It was good to get away, but it's good to be back home. I will resume to what you all love best (downloads) in a day or so. Please enjoy my latest commentary entitled "Mumbo Jumbo."

Controversial Fantasia

Controversy seems to follow Fantasia wherever she goes. Fantasia is perhaps the most controversial artists to come from the A.I. brand. Here is a rundown of the attention grabbing controversy Fantasia has garnered.

- being an unwed mother and not looked as a proper role model.
- revealing her illiteracy
- her racy tell all book which became a #1 best seller
- her highly rated Lifetime movie that drew criticism with A.I. reps and her family.

This woman has turned a lot of negative into positive. She is at the top of modern soul singers of the 21st century. This woman continues to keep us talking!

Mundane Mariah
You ever notice no one cover a Mariah Carey song? Mariah has been in this biz for nearly 20 years. But no cover songs? Mariah is always remaking or sampling someone elses' songs. I know there was something about her blocking songs from being sung on Idol. It wouldn't be easy covering a Mariah song though. I think that's why many Idol wannabe's opt to cover Whitney Houston songs.

Record Labels Not 2 Sign With
How many of you wanna be in the record industry? *raises hand* Here are the record labels to avoid and why?

1. Bad Boy - do I really have to say why? lol
2. Jive - not the best label for a R&B/Rap artists. Suggest otherwise.
3. J - the Idol haven for winners and runner-ups. Don't look for much promo from this Clive Davis-helmed label.
4. Def Jam - Def Jam has a history of artists complaining about their
treatment at the label. It doesn't help that the current president is an artist himself.

That leaves Columbia, Epic, Universal, Capitol Records and some others.

Just because an album doesn't sale doesn't mean it's not good. A lot of albums these days do very poorly. Who's to blame? The consumers, critcs, artists, or record labels? I think everyone can take some sort of blame to an extent. One of the main problems is the choice of singles. I think the single choices for albums are really important. There have been many wrong single choices in the past and we can all agree with that. Every album there is a song we all felt should of been released (whether it single worthy or not). There is also a huge gap (for a lot of artists) between first and second singles especially if the first single fizzles. Labels need to be on it! A lot of failed albums do about platinum on the bootlegging side of things anyway when you really think about it. You also notice that if the 2nd single fails for an artist, everything else is pretty much a wrap. There are a few exceptions, but the label isn't gonna keep investing money in a project that is already suffering.
